Choosing the right lightbulbs to finish your room

Lighting plays a hugely important role in our homes and is key in dictating the usability of a space.

A common problem that we encounter when working with our styling clients is that the feel and vibe of their rooms are misaligned with what they desire.  More often than not it is down to their choice of lightbulbs in ceiling, wall and lamps.

The impact of changing the strength and colour of just one bulb can be transformational, and should never be overlooked.

A small adjustment will not only change the amount of light in the room, but alter the appearance of paint and accent colour, make the space look bigger or smaller and also impact the room’s temperature.

So, to help you choose the right bulbs for your rooms, we have put together a few pointers.

The Kitchen - Bright and directional task lighting, for functionality, safety and visibility.

If your kitchen benefits from natural light, a 80w bulb will be sufficient, but can be increased to 100w to boost a darker room.  A cool white bulb will bring in a fresh look enhancing any white appliances or features.

The Living room - Welcoming warm and softer lighting.

Varied lighting in a living space to create zones is really powerful, allowing you to create a daytime space, and a more mellow evening room. When using table lamps, be careful to check the required bulb type and wattage for that fitting. A 50/60 watt bulb in a table lamp would bring the perfect amount of light into a targeted area but also allow you to layer the lighting with other lamps or lights in the room.

The Bedroom - Dim lighting to create a relaxed atmosphere.

Keeping a warmer and softer lighting in your bedroom creates a better tone to enhance relaxation and sleep.  Whilst some favour a cooler white bulb, it is important to choose a bulb that has some warmth to be softer on the eye.  A dimmable 60 watt bulb would be best suited to light a bedroom.

By keeping your bulb colour choice consistent in every room, and if possible throughout your home, you will enhance the flow of calm from room to room.
