Preparing and organising for your move

Moving house can be daunting for anyone. Especially the ‘clearing out’ process of household items.

Tackling a stage at a time can help to manage time efficiently and for the process as a whole not to become too overwhelming.

This is something you may feel you can achieve on your own, with your family mucking in, or you may want to get a professional to help you with the whole process.

Bear in mind that this may not be a quick process for you, it may take weeks or months to decide what you will be taking to your new home and what you will be parting with.

Here are some top tips and stages for organising and preparing for your house move:

1.A packing kit

Get a packing kit together that consists of various size boxes, bubblewrap, packing tape, marker pens and post it notes.

2.What will you keep?

Decide what furniture & personal items you will and will not be taking to your new home.

3. Labelling

Create visual labelling for easy awareness of items for keeping, donating and discarding. A top tip is to organise using coloured post it notes.

4. Space

Start by organising spaces such as; the garage, the shed or loft to clear possessions and create extra storage space for things that will be boxed up.

5. Rubbish or donate?

A skip, tip runs or charity collections may need to be booked in advance.

6. Work in categories

Go through all personal items in categories rather than working room to room such as; Books, DVDs, CD’s Kitchen items, Art work etc.

7. The keep pile

Consider storage solutions for items that will be taken to your new property. You don’t want these to get muddled up with the charity pile by mistake!

8. Packing

Begin packing the items you will be taking with you and make sure they are stored safely and ready for the removals.
