Tidy Bedroom - Tidy Mind

When we think about decluttering, thoughts of tidying pantries, wardrobes and not to mention that dreaded “bits and bobs” drawer springs to mind.  However, the most important declutter of all happens whilst you sleep.

According to BUPA, “as you sleep, your brain begins to organise and process all the information you’ve taken on during the day, converting your short-term memories into long-term memories”.

Which makes it all the more important to make sure that you get a restful night's sleep.

Research has proved that the best way to enhance your ability to sleep is to have a calming and decluttered bedroom, giving you the space to unwind and relax before eventually drifting off to sleep.

But, with summer evenings raising the night temperatures, makeshift home offices in corners in rooms and general day to day life, how can you make sure that your bedroom is set up to give you the space you need?

These quick tips to prepare your bedroom are sure to effortlessly help create the sleep inducing space you need.

  1. Clear sides of small items

Make sure that your bedside table is free of small items from the day - jewellery, phone, wrappers, tissues etc. By keeping the sides clear you will literally enhance the feeling of space around you as you sleep, allowing your mind to settle faster.

2. Close any wardrobe doors or drawers

We have all been there. Laying in bed ready to sleep, when you see the drawer is open. You start to feel restless as you battle with the “should I get out and close it? Can it wait?” mentality. Eventually, you reluctantly get out and close the drawers - re-stimulating your body and making it harder to rest.

Before you get into bed, always close all the doors and draws to take away any distractions.

If the draws are overloaded and unmanageable check out our toolkit blog to aid sorting and decluttering.

3. Remove any triggering artwork or photos with a strong personal attachment

Selecting the right wall art or photos in your room is very important.

Strong patterns and colour may overstimulate the mind before sleep, so choosing something softer and soothing may serve you better.

Likewise, personal photographs can also invoke strong emotions. Do you have photos on the wall from a previous relationship, a lost pet or a busy party holiday?

Always think about the story behind an image when placing it in your room to make sure that it is only sending you loving and comforting energy.

4. Let in fresh air

By keeping the windows open in the day, with blinds or curtains partially closed in the height of summer you will keep cooler air circulating in your room.

5. Use fragranced oils to enhance your sleeping experience

Using scents and fragrances in your room are a great way to relax before bed.

Nicky Jones, Clinical Aromatherapist and Owner of The Aroma Studio recommends Roman chamomile, Vetiver and Lavender for their calming and sedative qualities to boost natural sleep. Alongside these, she shared her recommendation for the less known Mandarin oil.

“Mandarin is a gentle oil which helps switch off a chattering mind”
